Breakthrough Inventions and Migrating Clusters of Innovation

چکیده

We investigate the speed at which clusters of invention for a technology migrate spatially following breakthrough inventions. We identify breakthrough inventions as the top one percent of US inventions for a technology during 1975-1984 in terms of subsequent citations. Patenting growth is signi…cantly higher in cities and technologies where breakthrough inventions occur after 1984 relative to peer locations that do not experience breakthrough inventions. This growth di¤erential in turn depends on the mobility of the technology’s labor force, which we model through the extent that technologies depend upon immigrant scientists and engineers. Spatial adjustments are faster for technologies that depend heavily on immigrant inventors. The results qualitatively con…rm the mechanism of industry migration proposed in models like [Duranton, G., 2007. Urban evolutions: The fast, the slow, and the still. American Economic Review 97, 197–221]. JEL Classi…cation: F2, J4, J6, O3, O4, R1, R3.

How radical is a radical innovation? An outline for a computational approach

Radical innovations prompt significant subsequent technological development and exhibit novelty and "architectural" innovation, i.e. rearranging the way design elements are put together in a system. Thus, radical innovations often serve as the foundation for new technological systems, industries or domains and are seen to involve significant conceptual breakthroughs, through either luck or geni...

A Dynamic Network Approach to Breakthrough Innovation

This paper outlines a framework for the study of innovation that treats discoveries as additions to evolving networks. As inventions enter they expand or limit the reach of the ideas they build on by influencing how successive discoveries use those ideas. The approach is grounded in novel measures of the extent to which an innovation amplifies or disrupts the status quo. Those measures index th...

No . 9 Independent Boards and Innovation ∗

Much research has suggested that independent boards of directors are more effective in reducing agency costs and improving firm governance. Less clear, however, is how independent boards influence innovation and innovation search strategies. Relying on regulatory changes that required shareholders to appoint a majority of independent directors, we demonstrate how the transition to independent b...

Balanced clusters and diffusion process in signed networks

In this paper we study the topology effects on diffusion process in signed networks. Considering a simple threshold model for diffusion process, it is extended to signed networks and some appropriate definitions are proposed. This model is a basic model that could be extended and applied in analyzing dynamics of many real phenomena such as opinion forming or innovation diffusion in social netwo...
